How to negotiate your first salary?

Don't do it. The advice is simple. Don't negotiate.

Being a fresher, you are in a poor position to negotiate and so don't
try.

Do your research and ask around to people who are doing similar kind
of and get an estimate and based on this estimate decide a sum you
think you are happy to live with for now. And state that price to the
firm. If the company is willing to give you that, well and good. Or
else give a straight no to the offer that is less than your estimated
offer, but don't negotiate.

So this is it. Don't go into any negotiation.

It should seem like a foolish advice but I have seen this technique
succeed countless number of times. How saying no and waiting bring
back people on the table? How being firm on your resonanle estimate
fetches you the job?

Stick to it and you will realize how much more worth you are.

Salary negotition is tricky business and HR people are trained in
getting the most juice out of any job offer, so if you enter in
negotiation for a job offer you are set to fail. So don't even try!!

One powerful Lesson from learning solidworks for learning your fav CAE tool

Learning any CAE software like catia, UG, hypermesh, solidworks, ansys
etc is lot like learning a foreign language. The more you practice it
in real-life situations, the better you become at it.

So what are you doing about it?

What is your strategy of learning your favourite cae program?

I will illustrate mine. In NAL I became fasinated with solidworks. It
was the primary cad tool in my lab and glancing at the cad operators
from my desk, I was always drawn to the fasinating tool.

So first thing I did was I asked for a demo from the cad folks and
asked them to point me to the tutorials. Once I had a look at those
tutorials and I began practising them. I began to venture out.

In my quest to learn the software, this tutorials were roads and
tracks laid down for me. As long I travelled on them I was doing good
and feeling confident but I was not confident to take a new design. So
along the way I began deviating from my path, I began exploring the
sideways. I delayed replaying the tutorials and began making household
utentils. Cups, plates stoves, replaced the bar coils and nuts and
bolts of the tutorials.

To cut the story short, my decision to do real life articles and stuff
enabled me to learn the software much more quickly.

So the whole point of this post is this. Don't be just a fan of the
tutorials. Walk on them, they are generally the best source of
learning but don't always keep to the roads and venture out to the
side walks and explore.

Keep aside the tutorials and try things from your world. Create cad
model of your study table, analyze the load of your bike etc.

Its truly like learning a new language, unless you practise it out
with the world, you won't be learning it enough!!

Seminar on Advances In Indian Aeronautics

Aeronautical Society of India Alumni association is organising a seminar on advances in Indian Aeronautics in Bangalore around late July.

advancesinaeronautics

See this space for more updates.

Fundamentals

Like just about everything in your life - you have to learn the
fundamentals before you know when you can break the rules.

You have to know what flavors work together and against each other
before you cook a feast fit for a king. You have to learn grammar and
spelling before you can write a book that others will actually enjoy.

Just the same way you have to learn how to create squares and boxes in
catia/solidworks before you create a gas turbine engine in it. You
have to create a simple truss in ansys, before you can mesh and
analyze the fuselage of an aircraft.

Fundamentals are must and this is where you should spend maximum of
your initial time. Even if you consider yourself as an expert, devote
30 mins daily on exploring the fundamentals.

How to prepare for technical interviews?

Do it like question answer session? Hand over your resume to your friend or collegue and ask him to ask you question based on that. Then explain the answers.

Continue till you have covered all tue projects, skills and u have exhausted the questions. This is the best way. Just reading books and papers and your project is not enough. I will suggest do the question and answer session first and then get to the bookss

This softens the soil. This makes your mind receptive of the things you want to project.

For a good interview preparation. Follow the question answer pattern. You will learn more than just reading books and different topics.

Good luck!

Relaxed Minds Remember Better

Lifehacker just mentioned a post titled Relaxed Minds Remembers Better at http://bit.ly/aKVeKS

It says

"If you're serious about getting the most mileage from that brain of yours, a new study points out that people form stronger, more lasting memories when they're relaxed."

This is exactly what i point out in this blog. Set a minimum hour and study only in that hour and after that relax.

Let your brain wonder on things apart from studies.

This not only applies to studies but to training and in your work life, do all the challenging mental stuff with a relax mind!!

Study with pen and paper

One simple tip to increase your productivity in studying is use pen and paper.

Don't just study with a book. Take a pen and paper and doddle along with your studies.

Try it for the next seven days and see the difference.

Cheers

Consistency

A couple of days back I read the following text somewhere and I
collected it as text file for my quotes log that I am keeping.

It has a great point and if we can understand this we can greatly
improve our performance in study and job.

"The key to getting better is consistency of effort…not consistency
of results. Consistency of effort leads to growth which leads to
consistency of results."

Yes be consistent in your efforts. Not consistent in your results.
That will follow. But aim to be consistent in efforts.

Consistent in studying for two hours per day, consistent in doing
catia, ansys tutorial one hour per day, consistent in learning fortran
or VBA, one hour per day.

This is the consistency of effort. Putting in the time. Tearing
yourself from an IPL match to put in that agreed hour. Gluing yourself
to the hypermesh tool for that extra out of work time.

Endevour to be consistent in your efforts.

My biggest mistakes in AeSI as a student

We all make mistakes. Some small, some big, some significant, some
trivial, but if we learning something from them then they are all worth.

Here In this series of post I will present some of my biggest mistakes
of my AeSI days!

1. Once I skipped exams thinking I am not prepared well. It was
flights paper and I thought I was not ready and I skipped the exam on
last moment and then paid the punishment for it for two more semester.

2. Not studying by the syllabus book. Again in flight I studied
everything that was taught in class, I had all the notes, I studied
from Anderson, kermode, and all other books and when I went to the
exam hall, I saw 30 percentage of question coming out of syllabus. I
cursed aesi.

And when I come home and tried verify any claim of outside of syllabus
question paper I saw how untrue that was. Those questions came from
the topics that were listed in the syllabus book. I was shocked that
some of the questions came from topics that were listed in the very
first line of syllabus.

3. Another big mistake that i did was I stopped following a teacher. I
thought he is not teaching well and I stopped attending his clases.
This didn't improve my studies but it nose dived the discipline of the
tutor.

As the tutor rolled over, I deterioted in that subject.

This were my biggest mistakes as an aesi student. I will keep this
theme alive and will post more on my other mistakes.

Well this were mine, now tell me about your biggest mistake in society?

How to use your mobile for studying?

Its simple!!

Use The stopwatch to surface and build challenges for you. Make a
topic exciting by using a timer and forcing to read the whole chapter
in a specific number of minutes.

If your mobile has recording facitily record the facts of the things
you studied and listen to them when you are in a bus or away from
studying.

Quick question and recall method can be daily done on a mobile. When
ever you read a new topic, make quick question for it in your mobile
notes and use them to review what you study when you have nothing else
to do. Like waiting for your girlfriend at the bus stop or waiting for
your class to begin.

There are many more, just employe your imagination and open up to this
fact that your mobile can be more than it is today.

Your circumstance and your make of the mobile model will spring lot of
facinating things for you!!

Do try this and Do tell me how are you using your mobile?

Please do share with us your stories!

Does your training have all this?

Training should have the following

"Thrill of discovery, excitement of exploration and sheer delight in
the creative process"

If you are not having any of these. You need to seriously re think
your stategy.

No body will hand you the coolest job, dashing project, and sparkling
career, you have to earn and create it.

So if you are in training, make good use of this opportunity. You have
a great shot at acheiving excellence than anyone else.

So buck up and use the opportunity !!

Good luck!!

Software language that cad modellers ansys analyst and CDF's guys should start learning.

If you are reading the blog for long then you will know I advocate
learning at least one computer language. I strongly recommend that
whatever be your field, your stream, you should at least learn one
compter language.

So in this post I want to explore the computer language that people in
specific streams of domain of work can learn. The suggestion are not
hard and fast. They are just general directions, you are free to
choose whatever excites you.

If you know what language you want to learn, that's great. But I am
writing this for anyone who is undecided.

Computer Languages that I will recommend.

VBA
Fortran
C
Matlab
APDL
Excel

Inclusion of excel as part of computer language might be a surprise
but I will explain it.

In the next post this week, I will elaborate some merits and demerits
of learning each of the mentioned language!

Well what are the languages you are learning? Do write in your comments.

How to grow confidence? 3 simple steps AeSI students and graduates can take!

Confidence comes from doing stuff? Confidence comes from climbing the
small hills? Confidence comes from the knowledge that you can do the
Work you are assigned to.

No one is born confident. Everyone acquire it.

Recently I received a mail from someone who is working in nal after
his graduation since 2008. His mail is an epitome of non confidence.

Don't want to judge someone from his one email, but I think he needs a
serious jolt and a big dose of confidence!

Buddy no one can instill confidence in you, no medicine can induce it,
no tonic can add it, you need to grow it yourself.

I was shy and still am when it comes to speaking in groups, but now
with this blog and many other online and offline things I have enough
confidence to speak up when it matters.

What should you do to increase your confidence?

Set small goals.
Accomplish them, celebrate them. Unless you try and fail and then
retry and pass. You will never gain confidence. Everyone try, fail and
suck in the job before they master it.

Read books. Instead of tv radio or cricket, read books. Read from a
lot variety of places. Read blogs. Reading opens up lots of
opportunities, it expands your horizon and stimulates your imagination.

Have a passionate creative habby! Create things, stuff or something.
It might be useful or otherwise but create something.

And I mean have a CREATIVE hobby. Listening song is not a creative
hobby, writing songs is. Seeing cricket is not a creative hobby,
playing it is. Reading blogs is not a creative hobby, writing one is.
So choose a CREATIVE hobby!

This week I will explore some specific techniques that I applied while
I was in nal to increase my confidence, so stay tuned.

How racing against time can help you learn catia better?

Racing again time is the most effective technique that you can apply
to your study or in learning a new software tool like catia, ansys,
hypermesh etc or computer language.

Constraining the limited amount of time you can work, you create a
positive pressure on your brain to learn and do the same task quickly.

It's like compressor of a gas turbine. The higher the pressure ratio
the higher will be the thrust or output. So constraining, limiting and
putting a chain around the task pushes your mind to a zone where it's
more creative and it does accomplish much more.

It's far far better to study for one hour with single minded focus
than chipping on the the book for the whole day hardly taking anything
in. It's far better to crack two tutorials of a software of Catia or
ansys in an hour than tinkering with the software for the whole day.
It's far better to practice ten input output related simple programs
than thinking whole day about your next big program.

The point is put time constraint in your work, study and everything
you do and you will see that you are doing better.

And what more you are gaining few extra hours in a day.

This blog post was also an exercise in the power of constraint.

'Keep in touch' Study technique

Keep in touch. It's as simple as that. If you keep in touch with what
you are studying and is being taught in the class, you don't have to
toll hard during exam time.

By this i am reffering to follow active revision policy. Revise
everytime. Revise at the start of the study session, revise at the
end of the study session and setup a revision day.

So make a revision centric timetable. Sandwich your study hours with
small slices of revisions. Do recall and summarize session for 3
minutes before every study hour.

This simple change in your study routine can help you leapfrog way
ahead of anyone.

Try it!!

How AeSI trainees can improve their chances of getting a job?

5 very specific things that all guys in training can do to improve
your changes of getting a job.

Update and upload your keyword rich but brief resume on a job
websites. Be brief and use specific keywords. Once the call comes send
in your full blown but optimised resume for the interview call.

Survey the job portal. See the jobs posting there and answer to
yourself honestly which is the most likely job that you can get with
your current skills in the resume. Answer this truthfully and half of
your job worries are over. Its not about what you want, it's about
what the Market has in offer for you. So decide this first!

Once you have found the job you likely fit in. Grab a book of the
topic that is the most sought after skill required by that
requirement. Start studying it one hour a day every day from that day
onward. Modifying your resume, sending your resume are tasks that you
will eventually do but first make a commitment to yourself to be
knowledgeable in the specific skill that is required.

Now optimise your resume for that specific job. Go through your
projects and skills and find connections to the job you are studying
for. If you find a project that has a connection, optimize it
otherwise nuke the project from your resume.

Same goes for skills. If it adds value to the requirement keep it or
else nuke it. Kill it. Treat your resume as telegrams. Do keep only
the stuff that is relevant and that matters.

Research the conpany and make a good unique cover letter to accompany
the resume. Highlight your skills relevant to the job.

Last of all send the resume to the firm direct. Find an email address
to send and send it direct. That's it.

If you can accomplish all these steps, you are few steps closure to
your job!!

Good luck

Iteration and why your resume needs one!

Remember iteration and if you need a pointer then look at google! It
does this with all it's products.

From orkut, gmail, gmaps, talk, chrome etc. Google launches the
product once the tool is ready in the barebone form. Then it does
repeated iterations to incrementally update and improve it's products!!

You need to do the same with your resume, it's can never be perfect
and it will never finish. So upload and start using the first barebone
document you have. But always do incremental iteration to it. Improve
it.

Nuke some projects, update the objective statements, add details,
increase skill related keywords. Do whatever that you can do but
iterrate and improve.

This is the only way you can take advantage of a resume. A resume
locked in your mail is of no value, a resume waiting to be perfect is
useless. So don't worry about the details. Post it and improve it!!

First launch then iterate. This is the stategy that will help you!

Are you learning at least one programming language?

Whatever stream you are in? Whatever subject you are reading, studying
and devouring? Whatever be your interests?

If you plan to be in an engineering domain and specially in aerospace
domain then at least learn one programming language.

Yes AT LEAST learn one programming language. The main point is you
should have a knack of how to write a program. You should know how to
solve a given problem.

Choose whatever language that is available to you, but do it anyways.
Choose whatever programming language that you can easily have your
hands on. It doesn't matter.

What matters is that you should have the ability to write peograms if
need be.

You see, you are and will be a knowledge worker. In whatever job you
land up eventually, computers will be your primary tools. And
programming and knowing how to program in one particular languge is
one skill that will always come in handy to you.

So decide one programming language today and get going.

That's what will help your work done in future!!

aerospace domain by clicking this link http://my-aesi.blogspot.com/search?q=programming

Walk-ins and how to make sure you don't return without an interview?

This post is about one thing that you can do immediately to your
resume to increase your chances of getting an interview call.

From all the resume I have seen, I find that we all work on varied
different projects. From CFD meshing, to code writing to
solidmodelling , to optimization.

And in an eagar jeal to get the attention of the recruiter we cram the
resume with all those work and projects. We proudly display
everything, from small to big, in our resumes.

And to make the matter worse, we paste a generic career objective to
the resume!

This confuses the recruiter. This throws the HR off balance. Not
knowing where you fit, which job is for you is a matter of his/her
thought and this is where you loose the interview.

This is why in a walk-in, the HR looks at your resume and asks you to
keep it with them and they will call you latter! And the call never
comes.

Your resume, complete in all respect but lacks the focus and this
forms a hurdle to your getting to the interview table.

So make your resume razor sharp.

Declare what kind of job you want. If CFD is your target job profile,
mention it in your objective statement. If CFD is the work you want to
do, highlight your CFD tools and skills rather than fortran. If CFD is
what you want to get into then highlight and make your resume CFD
rich!! Keep your target skills, projects and experiences first!!

Don't dilute your skills, experience and projects by mentioning
everything at onces.

This is the one thing that you can immediately apply to your resume to
stop coming back from a walkin without an interview!!

What are you waiting for, go make the changes!!

And good luck!!

Please forward it to your friends who might use this information to
their advantages!!

Constraints and how they can help you?

Some of my days are very productive, some are so lazy. Some are just
bad.

I set out to identify what is it that is different on my productive
days from the non productive days.

This post is the result of two things that I noticed in my pursuit.

Constaints and planning ahead.

Planning ahead was easy to pin. My most productive days were those in
which I did plan the day ahead the previous night. They days were much
more focussed if I defined the broad work I wanted to do. Whenever I
shuned that habit and didn't plan the day, my day was just a jumble of
tasks that came under firefighting and pure waste.

The other thing I noticed was setting a time constraint on the task I
need to do. I specified the minimum hour of time that I will devote to
a task. Like if I had to write a report in office, I constrainted
myself that I will do it after lunch for 1 hour and try to complete as
much as I can. This simple one hour constaints increased the focus and
concentrattion that I brought to that work.

Instead of chipping on the report for all day, I concentrated all the
effort in one focused hours and this not only left me lot of time to
do other things but made the report writing more challenging.

So what can you learn from this. In your training, in your studies, in
your life you too can apply this two universal principals. They work
and can make a great difference in your life if you can successfully
internalize this two as habits in your life.

All I can say is the earlier you begin, the better.
